August 2015 Summary

I thought I would create a monthly summary of my writing, reading, (and some films) to give you an idea about where my thoughts and progress are.

In August, I wrote 11,078 words, not including show notes for our Typehammer podcast.

I currently have three pieces of work in progress.

  • Stonelair is a short story. I am working on the second draft.
  • Dispossessed is another short story. It is set in the Battletech universe and I plan to submit it to them for publishing. I’m working on the first draft.
  • Working title: hobo is a novel. I am writing the first draft.

You can also follow me on Goodreads to see what I’m reading.

Secret Police Warehouse in Chicago

It’s like a police-sponsored Gitmo right in the middle of Chicago. From the Guardian

At least 3, 500 Americans have been detained inside a Chicago police warehouse described by some of its arrestees as a secretive interrogation facility, newly uncovered records reveal.

Of the thousands held in the facility known as Homan Square over a decade, 82% were black. Only three received documented visits from an attorney, according to a cache of documents obtained when the Guardian sued the police.

Despite repeated denials from the Chicago police department that the warehouse is a secretive, off-the-books anomaly, the Homan Square files begin to show how the city’s most vulnerable people get lost in its criminal justice system.

People held at Homan Square have been subsequently charged with everything from “drinking alcohol on the public way” to murder. But the scale of the detentions – and the racial disparity therein – raises the prospect of major civil-rights violations.

10 Ingredient Totalitarianism Recipe

Fascist America, medical in 10 easy steps, from 2007, by liberal author Naomi Wolf lists the 10 ways the Bush administration was creating a Totalarian regime. Frankly, I don’t think there’s much a difference between the Bush administration and the Obama administration on these points. Either way, it seems the government is moving in that direction.

  1. Invoke a terrifying internal and external enemy
  2. Create a gulag
  3. Develop a thug caste
  4. Set up an internal surveillance system
  5. Harass citizens’ groups
  6. Engage in arbitrary detention and release
  7. Target key individuals
  8. Control the press
  9. Dissent equals treason
  10. Suspend the rule of law

Climate Change Nightmares are Already Here

In this Rolling Stone article, patient  The Point of No Return: Climate Change Nightmares Are Already Here, website like this it seems apocalyptic climate changes are already here. Between melting icecaps, warming ocean currents, algae blooms and the like, we could see a climate change within one generation.

Some apocalyptic notes from the article:

“[…A] team of climate scientists had identified a newly important feedback mechanism off the coast of Antarctica that suggests mean sea levels could rise 10 times faster than previously predicted: 10 feet by 2065.

This leads to the scientists’ warning:

“We conclude that multi-meter sea-level rise would become practically unavoidable. Social disruption and economic consequences of such large sea-level rise could be devastating. It is not difficult to imagine that conflicts arising from forced migrations and economic collapse might make the planet ungovernable, threatening the fabric of civilization.”

Crazy storms are coming:

Since storm systems and jet streams in the United States and Europe partially draw their energy from the difference in ocean temperatures, the implication of one patch of ocean cooling while the rest of the ocean warms is profound. Storms will get stronger, and sea-level rise will accelerate.

And the apocalypse could happen in one lifetime:

Jacquelyn Gill is a paleoecologist at the University of Maine. She knows a lot about extinction[…]. The ancient data she studies shows “really compelling evidence that there can be events of abrupt climate change that can happen well within human life spans. We’re talking less than a decade.”

What will you see here?

I like to read, and write, about technology, science fiction, dystopian and post-apocalypse worlds. By extension, these are the types of articles I read online, and will post here. If you find the posts here interesting, you’ll probably like what I end up publishing.

As I publish work, I’ll also be promoting it here. This is my author website, after all, and is for marketing my writing.

Occasionally, you may find posts I write on what I like to read. Again, if I like to read it, you may enjoy it as well.

What you won’t see are articles about writing. While the craft of writing is something writers like to discuss, it isn’t the focus of this site. If you are a writer and are interested in that sort of thing, I co-host a writing and tech-of-writing podcast called Typehammer. Check it out over there.

Hello world!

See how it says “Writer John Uhri” over there on the left?

Someday soon, that’s going to say “Author John Uhri”.

Until then, this is my author website. Expect to find articles I find interesting that I hope my readers will also find interesting. Who knows, something you read here might end up in a story!
